A Thought On The Nairobi Mall Massacres
I know this is a very political issue, and not a light subject in the least. But I wanted to express some thoughts in light of the horrific situation that happened in Nairobi in the recent weeks past.
Last year Muslims around the world took to the streets in riots over a poorly made Youtube video depicting the prophet Muhammad. But in the wake of the situation in Nairobi I see no riots or backlash from the Muslim community on the slaughter of non-Muslim women and children by the Muslim group El Shabbab, and I think I might know why...
According to El Shabbab, whose associates have been operating a store in the mall for over a year, not only were there over 60 people killed for the crime of shopping while being non-Muslim, but many more bodies are still buried in the rubble of the building.
This is the largest terrorist attack in Kenya since the Al Qaeda led suicide bombing at the US embassy there in 1998. The only connection between the Nairobi massacre and the other 22 000 terrorist attacks committed in the name of Allah since the fall of the World Trade center is that they all have nothing to do with Islam at all. Or so we're told by Britain's Prime Minister, James Cameron in his press meetings where he states,
"I think the other thing to remember is that these appalling terrorist attacks that take place, in which the perpetrators say they do it in the name of a religion don't. They do it in the name of terror, violence and extremism and their warped view of the word. They don't represent Islam or Muslims in Britain or anywhere else in the world."
The problem I have with Prime Minister Cameron's statement is that in my on-going studies of the Qur'an and the Hadith I find something different. Only this morning I was reading through Surah 9:29 of the Qur'an which says, "Fight those who do not believe in Allah."
I want to make it clear that I am not pulling one verse out of the Qur'an and making a statement void of context...
"Strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be unyielding to them" - Surah 9:73
"Fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness." - Surah 9:123
Some Muslims read these verses and put them into context, believing the words they read on the page. Not understanding that as devout followers of Muhammad they're supposed to let Prime Minister David Cameron interpret Allah's commands for them.
Of course we know how Muhammad interpreted these commands, we have his words recorded in Sahih al-Bukahari 6924: "I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: La ilaha illalla (there is no God but Allah)."
So as a Westerner I am caught between what I read in the words of the Qur'an and the words of Muhammad in the Hadith, and what both Prime Minister, David Cameron says. But Cameron is not alone, President, Barak Obama has also repeated similar sentiments by declaring that, "Islam is a religion of peace with a long history of tolerance."
But David Cameron and Barak Obama were no where to be found when the Qur'an was being revealed in the 600s AD. So when Allah commanded Muhammad and his companions to start killing unbelievers, they did exactly that.
What has Islamic history testified for almost 14 centuries? Well, during the Nairobi Mall Massacre the Muslim terrorists only wanted to kill unbelievers which meant that some of the shoppers pretended to be Muslim believers. But the terrorist weren't about to be fooled, so they started asking Islamic trivia questions. One survivor stated that he was asked what Muhammad's mother's name was (her name was Amina by the way, but if you didn't know that you were killed).
Notice what we have here, people pretending to be Muslims even though they are not because they are afraid to be killed by Muslims and there is no where for them to hide. If you study the Muslim sources this might be familiar.
In Surah 9:56,57 we have a story where people during the time of Muhammad pretended to be Muslims because they were afraid of being killed by the Muslims and had nowhere to hide:
"And they swear by Allah that they are most surely of you (they swear that they are Muslims), and they are not of you (they aren't really Muslims), but they are a people who are afraid (of you). If they could find a refuge or cave or a place o enter into, they would certainly have turned thereto, running away in all haste."
Here we see a very similar situation. People who are not Muslims pretending to by because they cannot run and hide, they do so to protect themselves. Why were they so afraid of the religion of peace? Because, Muslims are commanded in Surah 9:5 that, "When the sacred months have passed slay the idolaters wherever you find them."
Muhammad and his companions did not know that Islam is defined by modern western leaders. So ignoring Prime Minister Cameron and President Barak Obama, they took Allah's messages very seriously. The unbelievers also took these commands seriously, which is why they pretended to be Muslims when they weren't. Just like the unbelievers in the West Gate Mall.
Muhammad however, did not ask trivia questions to test these people's sincerity. The prophet of Allah had a different test, we read in the Haddith that he would challenge their faith by telling them to go into battle against the Romans, if they refused they were killed.
This is why we find over and over in the Qur'an that jihad is the ultimate test of a Muslim's faith. It is why Muslims from around the world flock to Syria. It is why suicide bombers just killed 78 Christians in a church in Pakistan. And it is why Al Shabbab are so desperate to run into malls and shoot those who are unbelievers.
Terrorists are not going to stop killing in the name of Allah just because a few western leaders who, form their statements, do not understand or have never read the Qur'an.
"Surely Allah has bought of the believers their persons and their property for this, that they shall have the garden; they fight in Allah's way, so they slay and are slain. - Surah 9:111
