Rob Bell & Oprah Winfrey: The Apologetic of Apostasy

"Farewell Rob Bell." - John Piper

From their last few interactions it seems that Rob Bell and Oprah Winfrey are pretty good friends these days.  Bell has appeared on Oprah’s show numerous times, and just recently appeared, along with his wife Kristen, on her “Super Soul Sunday” episode over Valentine’s Day weekend.  Their appearance was designed to promote their new book, The ZimZum of Love: A New Way of Understanding Marriage (HarperOne: 2014).

I have a few confessions to make, first, I'm biased in this discussion. However,  I do believe that my bias is an informed one. I've read all of his books (you can find my review of his last one here) and I didn't mind the guy at first. I started reading his work back in 2011 because I was impressed by a few of his nooma media productions. And while he wasn't the most theologically sound of speakers, I liked the guy.

Unfortunately, Bell didn't tow the line for very long. For a long time he straddled the theol…

Obama's Blind Spot: The Crusades?

Unless we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ..."  - President Barak Obama, national Prayer Breakfast 2015

The Crusades may have happened ten centuries ago, but they’re back in the news  in 2015. President Obama basically lectured Christians not to get on a moral high horse in their castigation of the ISIS atrocities by reminding them that the Crusades and slavery were also justified in the name of Christ. Citing the Crusades, he used the single most inflammatory word he could have with which to feed the insatiable rage of the extremis…

Stephen Fry's Issue With God: Intelligence vs. Morality

The intellectual side of it [evil] we can keep debating from now till kingdom come. We talk about the theory of origins... we talk about the specified complexity of the way human life is, sometimes that which falls under the genre of intelligent design. But nobody would ever convince you that a dictionary developed because of an explosion in a printing press. Why not? Not just because it is thick, not just because a lot of it makes sense, but the specificity and complexity of the nature of language to take you from the beginning to the end shows you that there is an intelligence behind it. An intelligence that needs you to put it all together. And that is only a handful of a few thousand words made up of 26 letters in the alphabet. How then does that compare to our DNA, with its 3.1 billion bits of information? - Dr. Ravi Zacharias

I wanted to make a comment on the remarks made by comedian Steven Fry this last week (you can find the video here:…
